The story

How I got here.

Three acts. Twelve years in corporate, six in the studio, four years building my own brand from a phone. The order matters. Each one informed the next.

Twelve years in corporate creative.

I started in design and creative roles, worked my way up, and finished as Creative Director at eBay. Big titles, big budgets, big teams. Made work for brands that lived on billboards and in airline magazines.

It was a great education. I learned how brands work at scale, how to brief, how to lead creative teams, how to ship under pressure. I also learned that the work was never really mine. It was the brand's, the boss's, the client's. I wanted to build something that was mine.

Founded 55 Knots in 2019.

I started 55 Knots out of Sydney with one idea: build a studio for the platforms the big agencies were still ignoring. Social-first content, made for the algorithm, priced for actual small businesses.

The timing was awful. Six months in, the world locked down. So we built remotely. Small team in the Philippines. Tight processes. No office, no overhead, no excuses. Seven years later we're still privately owned, still hands-on, still working with brands across fitness, wellness, baby safety, and beyond.

Built BoltinBen from a phone.

During lockdown I started filming my runs. No plan, no audience, no agency support. Just me and the iPhone in my pocket. The idea was simple: if the methodology I was selling to clients actually worked, it should work on my own account first.

Four years later BoltinBen is 50,000+ followers, organic, no ad spend. Partnerships with ASICS, Apple, Maple Movement, Athletia, Recovri. 18 million monthly views at the peak. Along the way I picked up an ISSA running technique certification because if I'm going to talk about training I'd rather be qualified to.

The convictions I work from.

Not opinions. Things I've tested on my own account, my own bank balance, and my own clients over the last seven years. If I sell it, it's because I've already proven it.

Document, don't create.

Most creators try to invent something new every day and burn out. The ones who win document what's already happening. The methodology is in the consistency, not the inspiration.

Every framework 55 Knots sells gets tested on BoltinBen before it ever touches a client account. If it doesn't work for me, you don't get it. That's the deal.

Specific beats clever.

Generic best-practice advice is content cosplay. Niche-specific, format-specific, audience-specific work is what actually moves the numbers. Specificity is the moat.

The work compounds.

Year one of BoltinBen got 800 followers. Year four got partnerships and a real income. Most creators quit between year one and year two, right before the curve breaks.

Athletes make better marketers.

Training teaches you to show up on bad days. So does building a brand. The discipline transfers. So does the calm.

Three brands, one podcast, one big trip later this year. The Venn diagram of running, content, and business has a small overlap. I'm trying to live in it.
